Ordering OTC Benefits for a Family Member: Caregiver Guide
Helping a Loved One Use Their OTC Benefit
Many Medicare Advantage members need help from family caregivers to order and manage their OTC benefits. Whether your parent, spouse, or relative has mobility issues, cognitive decline, or simply isn't comfortable with technology, you can help them use every dollar of their benefit.
Getting Authorization
- Phone orders: Call the OTC benefit number with the member present. They'll need to verbally authorize you as their representative
- Online accounts: Set up the member's online account using their credentials. Most carriers allow a "caregiver" or "authorized representative" profile
- Power of Attorney: If you have legal POA, submit a copy to the insurance carrier. This gives you full access to manage the benefit
- In-store: Accompany the member to the store. They present their OTC card, you help select products
Tips for Caregivers
- Set calendar reminders: OTC benefits reset quarterly (Jan 1, Apr 1, Jul 1, Oct 1). Set a reminder 1 week before each quarter to plan orders
- Keep a product list: Maintain a running list of products your loved one uses and needs. Reorder the same items each quarter for efficiency
- Check expiration dates: Don't over-order perishable items. Vitamins and medications have shelf lives
- Coordinate with their doctor: Ask at each doctor visit if there are new OTC items they should be using
Remember: The OTC benefit belongs to the Medicare member, not the caregiver. Only order products that the member needs for their own health. Misuse of the benefit can result in plan termination.
