OTC Benefits for Dual-Eligible and SNP Plan Members: You Get More
Dual-Eligible Members Get the Best OTC Benefits
If you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid (dual-eligible), you're enrolled in — or eligible for — a Dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP). These plans consistently offer the most generous OTC benefits of any Medicare Advantage plan type.
Why D-SNP OTC Allowances Are Higher
- Supplemental benefits: CMS allows D-SNP plans to offer enhanced benefits because dual-eligible members have greater health needs and lower incomes
- Carrier competition: Insurance carriers compete aggressively for dual-eligible members (who bring higher CMS payments), so they offer more generous OTC benefits
- Typical allowances: D-SNP plans commonly offer $100-$200/quarter vs. $50-$100 for standard MA plans
Expanded Product Coverage
- Healthy food benefit: Many D-SNP plans include a food/grocery benefit alongside OTC — sometimes $50-$100/month for healthy foods
- Personal care items: Some D-SNP plans cover personal care products (soap, shampoo, laundry detergent) not available in standard MA plans
- Pest control: Certain D-SNP plans even cover pest control products for healthy home environments
How to Check If You're Dual-Eligible
- You receive both a Medicare card (red/white/blue) and a Medicaid card from your state
- Call 1-800-MEDICARE to check your eligibility
- Contact your state Medicaid office to verify current enrollment
Important: If you're dual-eligible and currently in a standard MA plan, switching to a D-SNP plan could more than double your OTC allowance. Compare plans during AEP (October 15 - December 7).
