How to Maximize Your OTC Benefit: Smart Quarterly Spending Strategy
Don't Waste a Single Dollar
Your OTC benefit is free money for health products — but only if you use it wisely. Many Medicare Advantage members leave benefit money on the table each quarter because they don't plan their purchases. With a simple quarterly strategy, you can get maximum value from every dollar of your OTC benefit.
Quarterly Planning Framework
- Week 1 of each quarter: Review your benefit amount and make a shopping list. Check what you ran out of last quarter and what seasonal items you'll need
- Prioritize essentials first: Medications, vitamins, and daily-use products come first. Bandages, pain relievers, and hygiene products you use every day should be your top priority
- Add seasonal items second: Sunscreen in Q2/Q3, cold medicine in Q4/Q1, allergy products in Q2. Buy seasonal items at the start of the relevant quarter
- Fill remaining balance: If you have benefit remaining after essentials and seasonal items, stock up on first aid supplies, extra vitamins, or skin care products
Smart Shopping Tips
- Buy generic: Store-brand products (CVS Health, Equate, up&up) contain the same active ingredients as name brands at a fraction of the price. Your benefit stretches much further with generics
- Check per-unit pricing: Larger sizes aren't always a better deal. Compare the per-unit or per-dose price between sizes to find the true best value
- Combine shopping: If your plan allows in-store purchases, combine OTC shopping with prescription pickups. One trip serves two purposes
Quarter-by-Quarter Guide
- Q1 (January-March): Cold and flu products, heating pads for winter joint pain, heavy moisturizer for dry winter skin, vitamin D (less sunlight means more deficiency)
- Q2 (April-June): Allergy products, sunscreen, insect repellent, first aid supplies for outdoor activities, eye drops for seasonal allergies
- Q3 (July-September): Sunscreen refills, hydration products (electrolyte packets), foot care for summer activities, after-sun care, travel health kits
- Q4 (October-December): Flu prevention (vitamin C, zinc, hand sanitizer), cold medicine, heavy moisturizer, emergency preparedness supplies, holiday stress relief
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting until the last week: Don't wait until the end of the quarter to shop. Online orders take 7-10 days and stores may run out of popular items
- Buying things you won't use: Only buy products you actually need. Stockpiling items that expire creates waste, not value
- Forgetting to check balance: Log into your plan's portal or call monthly to check your remaining balance. Knowing where you stand helps you plan
