Mobility Aids for Seniors: What's Covered by OTC Benefits
Staying Mobile Is Staying Independent
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in seniors over 65. Simple mobility aids can prevent falls and help you maintain independence. Some of these products may be covered by your OTC benefit, depending on your plan.
What May Be Covered
- Shoe insoles: Cushioned insoles and arch supports improve balance and reduce foot pain. Most OTC plans cover insoles. Dr. Scholl's and similar brands are commonly eligible
- Compression socks: Light compression socks (15-20 mmHg) improve circulation and reduce swelling. Many plans cover these through OTC benefits
- Elastic bandages: ACE wraps and elastic bandages support weak joints and help prevent re-injury. OTC-eligible across most plans
- Hot/cold packs: Reusable hot and cold therapy packs help manage pain that limits mobility. Most plans cover these
Products That Usually Need DME Coverage
- Canes and walkers: These typically require a doctor's prescription and are covered under Medicare Part B as Durable Medical Equipment (DME), not through OTC benefits
- Grab bars: Bathroom grab bars are usually not OTC-eligible but may be covered through home modification programs. Check with your plan
- Wheelchairs and scooters: These require Part B DME coverage with a doctor's prescription
Fall Prevention Products
- Non-slip bath mats: Some OTC plans cover non-slip mats for the bathroom. These are inexpensive and prevent one of the most common fall locations
- Night lights: LED night lights for hallways and bathrooms reduce nighttime fall risk. Check your plan's catalog for eligibility
- Grip aids: Jar openers, doorknob grips, and similar products help seniors with arthritis maintain independence
