New to Medicare? Understanding Your OTC Benefits from Day One
Welcome to Medicare Advantage
If you've just enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may have OTC benefits you didn't even know about. These benefits give you a quarterly allowance to buy health products at no extra cost. Here's everything you need to know as a new Medicare beneficiary.
What Are OTC Benefits?
- Free health products: Your Medicare Advantage plan gives you a set amount of money each quarter (every 3 months) to spend on over-the-counter health products like vitamins, pain relievers, first aid supplies, and more
- Not Part D: OTC benefits are different from prescription drug coverage (Part D). These are for non-prescription health products available at pharmacies and stores
- Supplemental benefit: OTC benefits are a supplemental benefit offered by your Medicare Advantage plan, not by Original Medicare. They're one of the advantages of choosing an MA plan
How to Activate
- Check your welcome kit: When you enrolled, you should have received a welcome kit with your OTC benefit card and instructions. If you didn't, call your plan
- Your OTC card: Some plans send a separate OTC card. Others (like UnitedHealthcare's UCard) combine it with your member ID card. Know which card to use at checkout
- Register online: Most plans have an online portal for OTC ordering. Set up your account early so you can shop as soon as benefits become available
When Do Benefits Start?
- Plan effective date: Your OTC benefits begin when your plan takes effect. If you enrolled during Open Enrollment, this is January 1. If during a Special Enrollment Period, it's the first of the following month
- Pro-rated first quarter: If your plan starts mid-quarter, your first benefit may be pro-rated (partial amount). Full quarterly amounts begin the next complete quarter
Common New Member Mistakes
- Not knowing you have benefits: Surveys show up to 40% of MA members don't use their OTC benefits. Don't leave free money on the table
- Waiting too long: Benefits don't roll over. If you don't spend your Q1 allowance by March 31, it's gone
- Buying non-eligible items: Not everything in a pharmacy qualifies. Cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and personal care items that aren't health-related won't be covered. Check the eligible items list
- Forgetting to use the right card: You must pay with your OTC benefit card, not your regular debit or credit card. The store won't automatically know you have OTC benefits
