Fall Prevention Products Covered by Your OTC Benefit
Falls Are the #1 Injury Risk for Seniors
One in four adults over 65 falls each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in seniors. Many falls are preventable with the right home modifications and products. Your OTC benefit may cover several products that reduce fall risk and create a safer living environment.
Bathroom Safety
- Non-slip bath mat: The bathroom is the most dangerous room for falls. A non-slip mat inside the tub or shower and another on the floor outside provides traction on wet surfaces
- Grab bars: Some OTC plans cover basic grab bars for the bathroom. Install them next to the toilet and inside the shower. They provide stability during the most vulnerable moments
- Raised toilet seat: Getting up from a low toilet seat increases fall risk. A raised seat or toilet frame reduces the effort needed and provides handles for support
Lighting and Visibility
- Nightlights: LED nightlights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms illuminate your path during nighttime trips. Motion-activated models turn on automatically when you walk by
- Flashlight: Keep a flashlight on your nightstand and another in common areas. During power outages or when a nightlight isn't enough, a flashlight prevents stumbles in the dark
Mobility Support
- Non-slip socks: Regular socks on hard floors are a fall hazard. Non-slip socks with rubber grips on the bottom provide traction. Wear them especially on tile and hardwood floors
- Walking cane tip replacements: Worn cane tips lose traction. Replace rubber tips every 3-6 months to maintain grip. Some OTC benefits cover replacement tips
- Shoe insoles: Supportive insoles improve balance and comfort. Well-fitting shoes with good arch support reduce stumbling and foot pain that alters your gait
Exercise for Balance
- Resistance bands: Gentle strength training with resistance bands improves leg strength and balance. Stronger legs mean better stability and faster recovery when you stumble
- Balance board: Simple balance trainers help improve proprioception — your body's sense of where it is in space. Even 5 minutes of daily balance practice reduces fall risk significantly
