Seasonal Health Guide: OTC Products Seniors Need Each Season
Plan Your OTC Spending by Season
Your health needs change with the seasons, and so should your OTC benefit spending. Smart seniors plan ahead, buying seasonal health products before they need them. Here's a season-by-season guide to maximizing your quarterly OTC benefit.
Winter (January-March)
- Cold & flu products: Stock up on Mucinex, cough drops, and vapor rubs. Cold season peaks in January-February
- Hand sanitizer: Keep sanitizer by the door and in your car. Flu transmission increases in cold weather
- Moisturizer: Dry winter air causes skin cracking. Stock heavy-duty body moisturizer for daily use
- Lip balm: Chapped lips are uncomfortable and can crack, creating infection risk. SPF lip balm protects even in winter
- Vitamin D: Less sunlight in winter means less natural vitamin D production. Supplement to maintain bone health and immune function
Spring (April-June)
- Allergy medication: Start antihistamines 1-2 weeks before your typical allergy season. Cetirizine, loratadine, or fexofenadine are all OTC-eligible
- Nasal spray: Flonase or Nasacort for nasal allergy symptoms. Start early for best results
- Eye drops: Allergy eye drops like Zaditor relieve itchy, watery eyes. Stock up as pollen counts rise
- Sunscreen: UV exposure increases in spring. Start applying SPF 30+ daily, even on cloudy days
Summer (July-September)
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Upgrade to higher SPF for peak summer sun. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors
- Insect repellent: DEET-based or picaridin repellents protect against mosquitoes and ticks. OTC-eligible
- Hydration supplements: Electrolyte packets help prevent dehydration in heat. Seniors are more susceptible to heat-related illness
- Anti-itch cream: Hydrocortisone for bug bites and heat rash. A summer essential
Fall (October-December)
- Flu prevention: While the flu vaccine is covered by Part B, OTC immune support vitamins (C, D, zinc) help strengthen your defenses
- Hand washing supplies: Stock antibacterial soap and sanitizer before flu season ramps up
- Heating pad: As weather cools, joint pain worsens for arthritis sufferers. A heating pad provides relief
- Q4 spending push: If you have remaining OTC benefit, use it before December 31. Stock up on items you'll need in January
