Skin Care for Aging Skin: OTC Products That Protect and Nourish
Aging Skin Needs Special Care
As we age, our skin becomes thinner, drier, and more vulnerable to tears, bruises, and sun damage. The right skin care products — many covered by your OTC benefit — can protect your skin, prevent common problems, and keep you comfortable. Good skin care isn't vanity — it's health maintenance.
Moisturizing for Aging Skin
- Body moisturizers: Look for creams (not lotions) with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. CeraVe and Eucerin are excellent options. Apply immediately after bathing while skin is still damp for maximum absorption
- Facial moisturizers: Use a separate, gentler moisturizer for your face. Look for SPF protection built in for daytime use. Fragrance-free formulas are less likely to irritate sensitive facial skin
- Hand cream: Hands show aging first because the skin is thin. Rich hand creams applied after every handwashing protect against cracking and dryness. Keep one by every sink
Preventing Skin Tears
- Barrier creams: Skin protectant creams with dimethicone create a protective layer over fragile skin. Apply to arms, hands, and shins — the most common tear sites
- Skin sleeves: Thin, breathable arm and leg sleeves protect against bumps and scrapes that cause skin tears in thin-skinned seniors. Wear when gardening, cleaning, or doing any physical activity
- Gentle cleansers: Harsh soaps strip natural oils that protect aging skin. Switch to soap-free, fragrance-free cleansers that maintain skin's moisture barrier
Itch Relief
- Anti-itch creams: Hydrocortisone cream (1%) relieves itching from dry skin, eczema, and insect bites. Don't use on large areas or for more than 7 days without consulting your doctor
- Colloidal oatmeal products: Aveeno and similar colloidal oatmeal products soothe widespread itching without steroids. Available as creams, bath treatments, and body washes
- Calamine lotion: Classic pink calamine lotion dries and soothes weeping, itchy skin. Effective for rashes, poison ivy, and insect bites
Sun Protection
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+: Daily sunscreen is essential even for seniors who spend limited time outdoors. UV damage accumulates and skin cancer risk increases with age
- Sun-protective lip balm: Lips are vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancer. Use SPF 30+ lip balm year-round, not just in summer
- After-sun care: Aloe vera gel soothes sunburned skin and promotes healing. Keep it in the refrigerator for extra cooling relief
