Skin Care Products for Seniors: OTC Benefits for Aging Skin
Aging Skin Needs Extra Care
As we age, skin becomes thinner, drier, and more fragile. Seniors are more prone to skin tears, dryness, itching, and slow wound healing. Many skin care products are covered by your Medicare Advantage OTC benefit.
Moisturizers
- Daily body moisturizer: Eucerin, CeraVe, and Vanicream are all excellent choices for dry senior skin. Apply immediately after bathing while skin is still damp for best absorption
- Heavy-duty for cracked skin: For severely dry or cracked skin, look for creams with urea (10-20%) or lactic acid. These exfoliate dead skin and deeply moisturize
- Fragrance-free: Always choose fragrance-free products. Senior skin is more sensitive to fragrances, which can cause irritation and allergic reactions
Anti-Itch Products
- Hydrocortisone cream: 1% hydrocortisone is available OTC and covered by benefits. Effective for eczema, rashes, and itchy skin. Use for short periods (2 weeks max)
- Calamine lotion: Classic anti-itch treatment that's safe for daily use. Good for insect bites, poison ivy, and general itchiness
- Colloidal oatmeal: Aveeno and similar products use colloidal oatmeal to soothe itchy, irritated skin. Safe for sensitive skin and daily use
Sun Protection
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+: Sun protection is essential even for seniors. Use SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection. Apply 15 minutes before going outside
- Lip balm with SPF: Don't forget your lips. SPF lip balm prevents sun damage and cold sores. OTC-eligible
Wound Healing
- Skin repair creams: Products like Aquaphor Healing Ointment protect and heal minor cuts, skin tears, and dry patches. OTC-eligible and essential for thin senior skin
- Barrier creams: For seniors with incontinence issues, barrier creams protect skin from moisture damage. Desitin and similar zinc oxide products are OTC-eligible
