What's NOT Covered by Your Medicare OTC Benefit: Common Exclusions
Know Before You Shop
Your OTC benefit covers health-related products, but not everything in the pharmacy or health aisle qualifies. Understanding exclusions prevents frustration at checkout and helps you plan your purchases wisely.
Common Exclusions
- Cosmetics and beauty products: Makeup, hair dye, anti-aging creams (unless medically necessary), cologne/perfume
- Food and beverages: Regular food items, protein bars (unless in the OTC catalog), energy drinks, coffee
- Prescription medications: OTC benefit only covers non-prescription items. Your prescriptions are covered under Part D
- Tobacco and nicotine products: Cigarettes, vape products, nicotine gum/patches (though some plans DO cover cessation aids)
Gray Area Items
- Sunscreen: Usually covered (it's an FDA-regulated drug), but check your catalog
- Insect repellent: Covered by many plans, excluded by some
- Hand cream/lotion: Basic moisturizers may or may not be covered — medicated lotions usually are
- Multivitamin gummies: Some plans cover them, others only cover tablets and capsules
How to Check Eligibility
- Catalog: If it's in your OTC catalog, it's eligible. Period.
- Phone: Call the number on your OTC card to ask about specific products
- In-store: Ask the pharmacist to scan the item — the system will tell you if it's eligible
- Online: Your carrier's OTC ordering portal only shows eligible items
Rule of Thumb: If it treats, prevents, or monitors a health condition, it's probably covered. If it's primarily cosmetic or dietary, it's probably not. When in doubt, check your catalog or call.
