Just Enrolled in Medicare Advantage? Here's How to Use Your OTC Benefit
Welcome to Medicare Advantage — Your OTC Benefit Awaits
Congratulations on enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan! One of the most valuable perks you may not know about is your Over-the-Counter (OTC) benefit. This guide walks you through everything you need to know as a new enrollee.
Step 1: Find Out If You Have an OTC Benefit
Not all Medicare Advantage plans include an OTC benefit. Check your plan's Summary of Benefits document, call the member services number on your insurance card, or visit your plan's website. Most popular plans from Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Anthem, and Aetna include some level of OTC benefit.
Step 2: Know Your Allowance Amount
OTC benefit amounts vary widely:
- Basic plans: $25-50 per quarter
- Mid-tier plans: $50-100 per quarter
- Premium plans: $100-200+ per quarter
Your allowance resets every quarter (January, April, July, October). Unused amounts typically do NOT roll over, so use it or lose it!
Step 3: Get Your OTC Card
Most plans mail your OTC benefit card automatically within 2-4 weeks of enrollment. Some plans use your regular member ID card for OTC purchases. If you haven't received yours, call member services.
Step 4: Find Approved Retailers
Common retailers that accept OTC benefit cards include CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Dollar General, and Rite Aid. Some plans also allow online ordering through their catalog or partner websites like OTC Health Solutions.
Step 5: Shop Smart
Focus on products you actually need and use regularly. Vitamins, pain relievers, first aid supplies, and dental care products are popular choices. Store brands offer the same quality at lower prices, stretching your benefit further.
Common New Enrollee Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to use your quarterly allowance before it expires
- Buying non-eligible products (cosmetics, food items)
- Not comparing prices between retailers
- Trying to use your card at non-approved stores
